ScrumMaster was designed and built for the day-to-day Scrum Masters out there trying to run development projects in an Agile way. Agile is a manifesto too, it is not a methodology! Most Agile zealots forget that. We wanted to create a tool to help Scrum Masters do what they think is best to make their team Agile.
ScrumMaster is designed to run on a standalone tablet or PC. It requires no databases or connectivity of any kind. Any Scrum Master can simply download and begin tracking their project backlog. It is an example of Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) as it is targeted for PERSONAL mobile devices, not corporate or cloud-based servers. You probably don't even need to ask permission from the IT department or your boss to use it as this software, and the data you create, belongs to you! The Scrum Master!
ScrumMaster is not meant to organize multiple team members, all of whom are updating daily story point progress or bug tracking. No developer needs to see his/her personal task burndown chart, nor do they need to update task status. Blasphemy, but still true. The team really only needs to know how the team is doing, and ScrumMaster does that. It tracks only what the Scrum Master tracks, on software meant to travel into each key meeting of the Scrum iterative process.
Allows the Scrum Master to prioritize the backlog with the product owner. We do not subscribe to the paradigm that a product owner does this solely on their own. The Scrum Master participates in the process and records the priority decisions as they are made. New stories and tasks are all made by and estimated by the Scrum Master; not by every team member, or even the project owner, as this affects the project completion date. If Sprint Planning rituals are held, the Scrum Master records the team’s story/task commitment to a sprint and the team’s agreed to estimates. ScrumMaster records how these estimates vary from original planning estimates. The cool feature here is the ability for team members to use Agile Story Sizing Cards™ on their own tablets or phones instead of planning poker cards during session. Again, in some teams, only the Scrum Master does sprint planning, and that is still Agile!
The application is designed to be used DURING the Daily Standup, where the Scrum Master not only records the effort of the meeting but changes task status as well. This keeps the meeting focus on what the team is committed to do and how much has been done. This not only keeps the focus on tasks, but also provides an accurate historical detail of progress during the sprint. All status changes occur daily and not just at the end of the sprint as everyone rushes to update task status prior to the Retrospective.
The Retrospective is really about closing a sprint and recording what velocity a team has ACTUALLY achieved during the cycle. Many teams do more than this (way more, Yikes!), but that is another story. The Scrum Master must record what actually happened in the last sprint to prepare for the next cycle. In this respect, ScrumMaster provides many options, including such non-standard functionality as taking partial credit for stories not yet totally 'complete'. When this option is selected, ScrumMaster breaks stories into parts and gives the team partial credit (a percentage) while in the backlog, still maintains the stories and their uncompleted work. The result is a more accurate portrayal of the real life development process. Scrum Masters can avoid misleading 'almost completed' backlogs that suddenly become 'done' creating very false and very misleading velocity spikes during the life of the project.
In addition, we recognize that Scrum Masters are continually required to give estimates of completion and statistics to management. ScrumMaster supplies Burndown charts and Sprint History graphs, as well as a variety of Reports that satisfy most management reporting needs. If we're missing something, let us know!
We supply graphs that let you examine how your project is progressing in two ways:
When will your project complete? We provide multiple what if tools to give you some idea when your project may complete based on all the variable factors that can affect a delivery timetable. This is very handy when your manager needs to know how much longer is this project going to take!
What has happened in my project so far that got me to where I am now. You can see how your past sprints have gone, how the backlog has change in size and complexion over time. We keep track of all changing items over the entire lifespan of your project.
We provide a wide array of different reports that give you the flexability to create informative and accurate reports of just what, when, and how your project sprints and backlog work.
We also interface with smartphone and tablet applications that simplify the sprint planning process if you use planning poker type sessions.
